Corrigan-Camden’s baseball season came to an end Thursday after a rain-delayed playoff series against state-ranked Shelbyville 10-0 and 23-5.
The Bulldogs were scheduled to play at 7 p.m. Wednesday, but lightning and heavy rain pushed the start time to approximately 8:30 p.m. The game remained scoreless through the first two innings before Shelbyville broke through, scoring six runs over the next three innings.
Play was suspended due to lightning with Shelbyville leading, and the game resumed Thursday afternoon. First pitch was again delayed by weather, with action finally restarting at 2:45 p.m. Shelbyville added four more runs to secure a 10-0 victory in six innings.
Game 2 began about 45 minutes later, with a downpour of rain and runs. The Dragons scored 12 in the first inning and continued to add to their advantage throughout the game, finishing with 23 total runs.
Corrigan-Camden managed to put together several scoring opportunities. In the second inning, Blake Elam doubled and Cooper Kilgore walked before both were driven in by Kreek Johnson.
The Bulldogs added another run in the third inning when Will Ratliff singled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Elam.
In the final inning, Mikey Murphy led off with a single, followed by walks from Kilgore and Colton Aiken to load the bases. Layton Cox laced a single to the outfield, scoring Murphy and Kilgore, but was thrown out attempting to stretch the hit into a double. A groundout and a strikeout ended the game — and the Bulldog season.
After a slow start, Corrigan-Camden turned its season around midway through the year to earn a playoff berth. With a strong core of young players set to return, the Bulldogs look to build on that progress next season.
