The Republican Club of Polk County awarded its annual scholarships to graduating seniors during its monthly meeting May 4 with over 80 club members, guests and elected officials gathered.
The four seniors from throughout the county addressed the crowd to express their appreciation and offer insight into their future plans and goals. This year’s recipients received $5,000 from the club’s two scholarship groups which are based on key figures of the Texas and national political landscape. One is the James White Scholarship, named after the former local state representative, and the other is the Charlie Kirk Scholarship, named after the conservative leader whose movement continues to attract the country’s youth, according to Club President Lewis Edinburgh.
Edinburgh and Board Member Sheri Shields awarded the scholarships. This year’s James White Scholarship recipients are Stan Sewell from Onalaska Jr/Sr High School and Brayden Cummings from Leggett High School. The Charlie Kirk Scholarship recipients are Rilyn Long from Livingston High School and Connor Ratcliff from Big Sandy High School.
Mark DuBose and Jay Stutts, the two candidates for Precinct 2 county commissioner who will face off in the May 26 runoff election, offered key points on their positions and Maddie Smith, a Turning Point USA field representative, provided a status briefing.
