Starting off hot

Big Sandy convincingly won the opening round of playoffs versus Burton 70-44 Tuesday at West Fork High School.

The Wildcats started the game on a 19-2 run, making their first four or five shots. The score reached 30-6, and Burton had an uphill battle from that point forward.

“They kind of made it comeback in the second (quarter), but we just reinforced everything in the third and fourth and led wire to wire,” Big Sandy coach Dalton Flowers said. “I was proud of the boys. This is our first playoff win in two years. We really don’t have a ton of experience in the playoffs, other than two boys.

“We were really focused in practice the last couple of days, and I really thought that was the difference tonight. We came out locked in and executed our assignments offensively and defensively, and just knocked down our shots.”

The game turned a little ugly, as Burton was charged with three technical fouls.

Shudey Beene-Williams led the Wildcats with 15 points, Naki Thompson had 14, Jamesley Flowers 13, and Colt Bullock and Jasper Hardy scored 11 each.

The Wildcats have Granger (22-10) in the area round at Normangee High School.
