SunDoseNot

DidYouKnow ColumnHeadSo, did you see the eclipse? I am writing this before the day, but I saw a partial eclipse in 2017. I remember it lowered the temperature a little for a short while. We have other things to look forward to this coming week.

Texas Grill and Cafe in Shepherd will have a crawfish boil on Saturday from noon till sold out.

The cafe part of this restaurant is praised for its coffee selection. My husband and I had lunch there this week. I like fish and chips since I was born on the northeast coast of England and ate it regularly. It is cod and fries and is served with salt and vinegar.

I reminded William, the owner, the first time I ate it at his old location that vinegar was essential with fish and chips for Brits. He always had it since then till this week they ran out. William said, “I will go to McClain’s for a bottle for you,” and dashed off. He was back in minutes while I waited and the meal was, as always, delicious. This is service.

The staff and food are always excellent. Located at 1318 S. Byrd Ave. in Shepherd, call (936) 402-8800.

•Sadly, a longtime sheriff of our county passed away this last week. Lacy Rogers, who was just short of his 80th birthday, was the Sheriff of San Jacinto County for 20 years. I know many will remember him even though he left the position in 2008.

•Shepherd Chamber named the new business Brewtique as Business of the Month. If you have not yet had a chance to visit, please do. The place looks so different from when it was an auto store. The bakery Oh Taste and See is perfect to go with the cup of coffee available. Angie Douglas, the baker, also does custom cakes. Call (281) 593-9996.

•If you want to show off your chili cooking expertise, enter the cook-off fundraiser to be held by the Shepherd Library on May 18. Call them at (936) 628-3515.

•SJC Historical Commission is having a special event on April 21 at 2 p.m. in Old Town Coldspring. All are invited to the dedication of a block of sunset red granite which fell off a train of flatcars on the way to building the Capitol in Austin in the 1880s.

For years it lay by the tracks till it was retrieved in 2000. It has been donated to our county in memory of Dr. Stephen Everitt, signer of the Declaration of Independence of Texas on March 2, 1836.

This block of granite weighs 20,000 pounds and has been placed by the Old Jackson Store, once located in Everitt and now moved to Old Town Coldspring.

You will notice the name Everitt as being familiar. Dale Everitt is a descendent of Dr. Everitt, and William Everitt was appointed Postmaster in 1890. This store was the Post Office then and will now be the backdrop for the sunset red granite, which was meant to be part of the Capitol but instead landed up in Coldspring, where it will be admired by many.

The Historical Commission, SJC Commissioner’s Court and SJC employees placed the block by the Old Jackson Store. Come and be a part of the dedication at 2 p.m. followed by a reception at the American Legion 1348 on FM 3278 at 3 p.m.

Contact the Shepherd Chamber of Commerce at (210) 995-7420 or the Coldspring Chamber at (936) 653-2184.

Yvonne Cones is president of the Shepherd Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Coldspring Chamber of Commerce.
