Although the last baseball game of the season did not go as the Shepherd Pirates wanted it to, Coach Anthony Trevino said, “Our main goal this year was to teach a very young team to play baseball at the High School level, and I think we did just that.”

A Coldspring loss and a Shepherd win would have sent the teams to a seed playoff game, but the opposite happened — Coldspring won over New Waverly 5-1 the same day Shepherd lost to Onalaska 3-1.

Shepherd’s Marshall Reeves was the starting pitcher and was on his mark, with strikes falling into place. A few errors, overthrown balls and a few fielding mistakes, however, caused the Pirates’ downfall. After Reeves finished his game Tristen Cullum had his last mound visit as a Shepherd Pirate to finish the night.

Seniors Tyler Baldridge, Tristen Cullum and Trainer Baylee Windt were honored before the game started and received gifts to remember Shepherd.

On Friday, Coldspring lost its second game of the week 8-2 to Tarkington. However, the Trojans 8-6 district record was enough to advance them to the bi-district round, where they will face Danbury in the best 2 out of 3 series.

The Lady Pirates fell 2 games to 1 against Van Vleck in the bi-district round of the postseason softball tournament on Thursday.

Shepherd lost the first game 13-2 but won the second 2-1. However, they were edged out in the rubber match 8-6 to end their season.

In the first game, Rylei N and Isabelle Hooper provided hits for the team, and Hooper and Jayci Wilson led the defense, combining for 8 strikeouts but allowing 13 hits.

In the second game, Neveah Murphey had three hits to lead the offense, and Hooper kept Van Vleck at bay by tossing 9 strikeouts while allowing only 6 hits.

In the final stanza, Adison Simpson and Neveah Murphey had three hits apiece to lead the offense, while Wilson and Hooper teamed up on the mound for 4 strikeouts while allowing 11 hits.

The Lady Trojans ended their postseason romp on Saturday in the first round with two losses to Danbury — 11-4 and 17-7.

Haylee Rosales and Olivia Lee had 2 hits apiece in the first game to lead the offense, and Lee and Trinity Rosales took the mound and allowed 11 hits.

In the second game, Rosales had 3 hits and 3 RBIs in the game at the plate while tossing 3 strikeouts and getting rocked for 26 hits on the mound.
