COCISD discusses path to excellence plan

On March 23, the Coldspring-Oakhurst Board of Trustees met to discuss how the district can move forward and improve academic performance.

Dr. Bryan Taulton, COCISD Superintendent, provided the board with updates on the district’s accountability report.

Taulton states that the 2025 overall TEA A-F district rating is a 69 with the added penalty cap and 71 without the penalty cap. The penalty cap was applied to Lincoln Junior High, due to the campus not meeting the 60-point threshold in student achievement and school progress.

“I want to share important context about the significant rise in low accountability ratings occurring across Texas — and why our district is not alone in facing these pressures,” Taulton said.

Taulton pointed to pandemic learning loss, algebra I performance, STAAR redesign in 2023, higher accountability benchmarks post-graduation readiness, middle school progress measures, and poverty impact as converging factors driving this trend.

Taulton stressed that LJH is the central focus for accelerated development.

“Elevating student achievement at Lincoln Junior High is critical to the district's overall academic success, as it serves as a foundational stage where academic skills and habits are developed that directly shape student success at the high school level and beyond,” Taulton said.
