Commission discusses grant spending

COLDSPRING — San Jacinto County Commissioners changed the scope of road work that was to be paid for by grant funds received after Hurricane Harvey.

Work planned for Donaho Road was removed, and     , at the county’s regular meeting on Wednesday.

When the grant funds were first sought, the specific work needed had to be listed; however, Donaho Road had been repaired using different federal funds — through the American Recovery Act — and was no longer needed.

Instead of moving the funds to a different project, commissioners had to make the changes in parts because of federal requirements on spending grant funds. Once the funding was removed from Donaho Road, the remaining funds were approved to be divided among road projects in Precinct 1.

In other business, commissioners:

  • nominated Sky Spivey and Michael Courvelle to the San Jacinto County Appraisal District board of directors;
  • accepted the donation of road materials from Adams Contractors for the memorial park;
  • approved a contract with Smith Paving for construction on Lee Turner Road, which will be signed once proper documentation is provided;
  • opened bids for engineering and administration work for grant-related projects, and referred the items to the scoring committee;
  • took no action on a request to partially fund the construction of new wells for the San Jacinto Special Utility District;
  • approved a request to allow county employees and offices to participate in Toys for Tots;
  • approved the release of a right of easement for Jeffrey Bell in Cape Royal subdivision;
  • approved the final plat for Olde Oaks Acres;
  • approved the increase of the price to discard mattresses from $25 to $27;
  • approved repair of the floor in the county jail; and
  • declared a 2026 Ford F-150 pickup surplus to be sold on an auction site.
