Did You Know

Christmas on the Square in Coldspring was very well-attended even though the weather was rainy at times. The Hot Steppers performed in front of the Courthouse, wonderful as always. We ate some Thai food, I bought gifts for family and friends and met a lot of people I know. It really is a great place to connect with people.

The SJC Historical Commission drew the three winners of the raffle. Nina Sledge from Rosalie’s Cottage won the Music System. The Bigfoot Quilt went to Sylvia Butler who wanted it for her grandchildren and the guitar was won by Dr. Judi Benestante. (Will the mayor be playing?)

I love the Kid Zone. The Petting Zoo and pony rides are so much fun. The baby camel was lying down eating the grass while the rest of the animals were enjoying a nice space.

• The San Jacinto County Women’s League had their Christmas lunch this last week. Guest speaker Nina Sledge talked about her store, Rosalie’s Cottage, and how it is named after her grandmother. She brought some items from her store — quilts, home decor handmade and more, art work, etc. Nina, who I mentioned won the first prize in the Historical Commission Raffle, talked about the Saturday music event which she holds every week. The bluegrass music group is open to everyone and is a very popular event.

• Shepherd Family Restaurant and Daiquiris To Go will be open on Christmas Day for a free Christmas lunch for anyone who wishes to come. There will also be a delivery to those shut-ins, please let them know beforehand. Starting at 11 a.m. till they run out of food, they are located at 2700 S. Byrd Ave., call (346) 988-5059. This business will be the next Business of the Month for Shepherd Chamber of Commerce.

• Friends of Shepherd Library has a Facebook page where every event is announced. Watch out for the next appearance of Reginald the Talking Tiger. Reginald got his name from an idea from Easton Wolfe. Reginald lives with me and has the name of one of my favorite characters in a series of short stories.

Easton is President of the Student Council and will be an intern for the incoming State Rep. Janis Holt. He and the Council members are planning an event in February. It will be on the High School webpage, of course, but it will also be on this column, Easton is very outgoing and community minded and will be going to university to study Political Science.
