Riding in Point Blank getting smoother

POINT BLANK — With one grant for roadwork kicked off last week, and a second one kicking off soon, the roads in the town will get much-needed facelifts.

Mark Wood, serving as an administrator in the absence of a mayor, said that at the Dec. 8 meeting, the City Council discussed the roadwork that will pave 1 ½ miles of Oak Tree Lane, and  the upcoming kickoff of a mitigation grant of $500,000 for road and drainage in the city.

Wood said that it took three years to get the grants moving.

Additionally, the council gave its approval to Wood to purchase $5,000 worth of material for minor road repairs as part of an experiment, whereby different products will be tried in different areas as the city is seeking alternatives to offset high costs of asphalt construction.

Wood said the program will take some time to yield results but has generated interest from county officials since it costs $100,000 a mile for asphalt construction.

In other business, council members:

  • approved the annual audit, which was submitted with no qualifying statements; and
  • discussed modifying a sign ordinance to incorporate new state regulations regarding “bandit” signs which are placed in highway rights-of-way.
