Christmas in San Jacinto County truly lasts a season

Over the last 3 weeks our county has celebrated Christmas every Saturday with a community event. Last Saturday we had the Community Voices of San Jacinto County perform at the Coldspring Shelter and it was a wonderful event.

Shelley Thompson and members of her Board organized a beautiful concert with Conductor Andrew Main leading the voices through the lovely selection. More than 400 people attended this event, and Rob Freyer welcomed them in his role as Master of Ceremonies. Paul Horton Methodist Church supplied refreshments and there were 12 churches represented in the choir. Gregg Cones started the evening with a selection of Christmas songs while the crowd settled in and the whole event was a great success. Look for this group performing again in 2026.

•Coldspring Senior Center enjoyed a delicious Christmas lunch on Friday with an additional treat as well as cake being a drink called The Grinch. It had a layer of cream on top which blended nicely with the flavor. The meal was sponsored by Lamb Propane, and everyone enjoyed the meal, music and fun. Administrator Charlene Smith wore her gift from her staff which was a “one-of-a-kind” present.

•April Plunkett is a quilter, a member of the Quilts for Kids organization as well as a volunteer for other groups. She made a coat from one of her quilts, bought a toy Santa and made a complete costume for him too. She says she is going to add to the lapels on her coat but it looks great to me.

•Barbara Justice received an Award of Excellence, with appreciation from Polk-San Jacinto NAACP Champions of Change event. This ceremony was held in Dunbar Gym in Livingston last week.

•Brenda Myers, founder of the Community and Children's Impact Center in Shepherd, held a spectacular gathering of all those the Impact Center wished to honor for all the help, work and donations they had given. The photos on Facebook will show you better than I can describe how lovely the Christmas decorations were, so many lighted Christmas trees, decorations and color, really an amazing setting for the evening. Thanks to all who made this event so beautiful, and we look forward to seeing what 2026 brings.

•The Reagan-Trump annual Dinner is fast approaching. To be held in Coldspring Shelter on Jan. 31, 2026, this is a must for members of the party. Look on Facebook and the website to buy tickets.

•Shepherd Chamber of Commerce invites business owners who would be interested in selling their products at a monthly Farmers' Market on a Saturday. If you are interested, contact me at the Chamber phone number below. You may also text to that number. The Chamber agreed at our last meeting to see if there is enough interest in this endeavor. If there is, we hope to start the market at the City Park by Shepherd Library. This is a nice central location and would be good for those who have small, home-based businesses.

Contact the Shepherd Chamber of Commerce at (210) 995-7420 or the Coldspring Chamber at (936) 653-2184.

Yvonne Cones is president of the Shepherd Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Coldspring Chamber of Commerce.
