COLDSPRING — COCISD Board of Trustees discussed a new state law requiring district administrators to preview any materials coming into the library system.

At the Sept. 23, Laurie Bogner, COCISD district librarian, provided the particulars of Senate Bill 13 and how this new policy will affect the district.

“Our goal is to ensure that all books in our collection are age appropriate, educational, and inclusive,” she said.

Bogner said Senate Bill 13 expands parents’ rights to restrict any materials they do not want their child to access or check out, and that the district prides itself on transparency, ensuring parents they are providing a safe environment for them and the children.

The board then approved a list of all library books.

In a separate matter, Superintendent Dr. Bryan Taulton expanded on the district’s focus for the school year, saying that math is specifically targeted for growth.

“The area that everybody has to understand from a district standpoint for us to improve is mathematics,” Taulton said.

Additionally, Taulton insisted that the district’s focus on communication “on Facebook, our website, and also making sure there’s a lot of communication between our teachers and families as well.”

In other business, the board:

  • approved changes to the district’s investment policy;
  • tabled approval of the district improvement plan;
  • approved revisions to the Lincoln Junior High Turnaround Plan; and
  • heard updates on ESL, highly mobile, special needs, and Gifted and Talented programs.

The next meeting will be on Oct. 27 at 6:30 p.m. at the Coldspring-Oakhurst High School Main Foyer.
