COLDSPRING — The Coldspring-Oakhurst CISD approved items toward the May election for the two board members whose terms are ending.

Superintendent Dr. Bryan Taulton said that members Berlin Brafford Tony Sewell positions are up for election, and at the Jan. 23 regular meeting, members approved a contract with the San Jacinto County to hold the election and approve Election Administrator Cheri Walker as election clerk.

In a related matter, the board discussed seeking another bond election in May of this year or next year to help shore up funding shortfalls.

The district attempted a VATRE election in November 2024, but voters turned down the measure.

Taulton said the debate also centered around funding because there are unknowns about what the current Texas Legislature will do in the current session.

In another matter, the board discussed the Texas Academic Performance Report for the 2023-24 school year, which was released recently by the Texas Education Agency.

Taulton said the district continues to make academic gains, but still needs improvement in certain areas.

“I’m excited about the growth we’ve shown,” he said.

The next meeting will be held Feb. 24 at the COCISD High School Foyer.
