Coldspring board mulls new bond issue

COLDSPRING — The Coldspring-Oakhurst CISD Board of Trustees is considering a bond issue for the November election based on a recommendation from the district’s Facilities and Finance Committee.

Superintendent Dr. Bryan Taulton said that at the March 24 board meeting, the committee recommended the board to pursue a bond in November that will repurpose and rebuild the Jones Complex for students in third through sixth grades, which will help relieve overcrowding.

Additionally, the bond also would allow the district to move student to different campuses while adding classroom space, keeping in mind expected growth in the county, Taulton said.

“There are much-needed upgrades across the district, including lighting, restrooms, esthetics, branding and modernizing most items,” he said. “A total dollar amount has not yet been set.”

In a separate matter, the board discussed hiring and dismissals, which includes the retirement of Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Ken Stanley, which was announced Thursday.

In a letter to the district, Stanley said he is retiring to be there for his family, and thanked the coaches, administrators, the players and the people of the community for the opportunity to make the Coldspring sports program something to be proud of.

Taulton said the district will start a search for a replacement, and the job is posted in the appropriate places.

In other business, the board:

  • discussed a real estate deal that was in progress with the city of Coldspring;
  • renewed a request for purchases in case of issues with air conditioning as temperatures are starting to climb;
  • gave annual approval for E-Rate; and
  • approved professional contracts.
