May 11 is Mother’s Day. How quickly this year is passing.

The next quarterly lunch for Coldspring Chamber of Commerce will be on May 13 at the Community Center behind the Courthouse. Tickets are available at the Chamber office at $12 before the date and $15 on the day. Please call the office to reserve your place. The guest speaker will be Marsha Strickland and catering will be served by Aunt Jessie’s Kitchen and Catering.

• Both the SJC Master Gardeners and the Coldspring Garden Club have been very busy with field trips and planting seeds around Coldspring. The bluebonnets are blooming, and members have enjoyed seeing other gardens and buying plants at the Trades Day on Saturday. The latter was a success for both organizations due to the volunteers who made it work with the colorful tables of plants and art work for the garden.

• On May 24 the San Jacinto County Animal Shelter will host Bark in the Park at Wolf Creek Park and it will be adoption and donation day for the shelter’s dogs.

Running from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., entrance is free and there will be complimentary hotdogs, chips and drinks. If you wish to donate supplies to the shelter, they will be very welcome — not only food but towels to clean or dry them off, toys, etc., are welcome. Call (281) 541-8537 or (281) 450-3676 for more info.

Puppies and older dogs as well as young dogs will be there for adoption. All have had shots and operations and will be chipped when they are adopted. I showed puppy Cocoa recently. He and his family are up for new homes.

• Shepherd has a new O’Reilly’s Auto Parts Store now and soon will have a Tractor Supply Store on the frontage road 59S. The groundbreaking ceremony for this will be May 6. More news is coming soon.

• Remember Coldspring Library is celebrating its 40th birthday this year. Shepherd Library is partnering with Coldspring in events and especially the Dolly Parton Imagination Library which send free books every month to children from 0- 5 years old. Dolly started this program some years ago and it has spread across many countries and is a big success.

Reading to young children so they want to learn to read for themselves is a wonderful way to teach them to read. Shepherd Library has a class every Tuesday called Creative Creations Crochet. If you are interested, it is from 4- 5 p.m. Tiny Tales Story is on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. To see the full schedules for both libraries go to their websites.

• Shepherd Chamber of Commerce hosts the Independence Day event at the Shepherd Community Center on July 5. This means everyone will have the opportunity to celebrate with fireworks, food and fun , music and kids games twice. Vendors who wish to sell their home-made goods, baked goods, hot food, jewelry or arts and crafts can start to sign up for the event. Go online for the form or collect one at Shepherd Library. This is a community event for all the family.

• The Historical Commission of our county and the Friends of Hopewell held a combined meeting last Thursday at the Hopewell Center in Coldspring. Information was shared by the two organizations on plans and the meeting was very helpful to both groups. Spring cleaning the Jail Museum is ongoing and plans for fundraisers were discussed.
