COLDSPRING — The Coldspring City Council will start the new year on a footing for improving the city.

Mayor John Benestante said that at the Jan. 6 council meeting, council members discussed several grants the city has been awarded, including one for $500,000 that will allow the city to replace manholes.

Benestante said the city received “a super good bid” and should get started on the renovations soon.

Additionally, the city will be seeking bids for the construction of a new lift station, as the studies and mapping phase of its project is completed.

The mayor also said a state grant for walking trails has been approved, and surveys have begun in connection with a $3 million grant to construct sidewalks.

In a separate matter, the deed for the Coldspring Volunteer Fire Department building has been recorded in the city’s name, which will allow the city to get started on much needed repairs to the roof.

Also, the council discussed a resolution in support of improvements to the electrical grid being proposed for the area.
