Coldspring intends to regulate slot machine games

COLDSPRING — Mayor John Benestante met with the Coldspring city council to provide updates on new regulations, current projects and city revenue.

Benestante said that he is working with the City Attorney Greg Magee to enforce a new ordinance that will regulate slot machines in Coldspring.

“I continue to visit with the council about some type of ordinance. We’re not going to be able to stop them, and we’ve got to be able to regulate them,” Benestante said.

Coldspring intends to make establishments with game machines pay for a permit and issue a monthly report on how much each machine pays out to ensure all laws are being followed.

In addition, Benestante said two new smoke shops are coming to Coldspring, and new regulations will apply to their establishments as well. Coldspring will enforce a federal law that states all vape products being sold have to be U.S. made. New ordinances will be drafted by next month.

Benestante informed the council of Coldspring’s finances.

“The general fund should be at 25 percent on the revenue side or 35 percent, meaning where revenue is picked up and exceeded where we need to be,” Benestante said.

Expenses are said to be at 11 percent for the first quarter, which is a slow start but is expected to increase throughout the year.
