COLDSPRING — The San Jacinto County Commissioners Court approved dipping into a building fund for the Sheriff’s Office to pay for repairs on two communications towers.
At the Wednesday meeting, the court approved spending $179,853 on repairing communications towers in Coldspring and Oakhurst, which will offer improved radio traffic, but not before hearing from County Judge Fritz Faulkner about funding.
After Chief Deputy Stan Jolly discussed the need for the repairs since the VHS system is not operating properly, and they received the quote from Davey Wells Communications. That quote also includes a monthly maintenance fee of $1,150.
“I believe that (the radio project) would be necessary for the livelihood of our men and women,” he said.
Before the vote, Faulkner admonished Jolly about funding for the request, asking if he understood how budgets work.
“We budget for a whole year, and we don’t have an invisible source of money,” he said. “The only place I know of where we could get that kind of money is we have a building fund for a new facility for you.”
In the vote, that’s what the commissioners opted to do.
