County debates building new Sheriff’s Office

COLDSPRING — While the county has put money and effort into keeping its jail space up to standard, workspace for the Sheriff and his deputies has been largely ignored, and the Commissioners Court on Wednesday discussed remedying that situation.

County Judge Fritz Faulkner said that money has been earmarked in previous years for a new building; commissioners pointed out that there was some question as to the location of a new facility.

Commissioner Donnie Marrs said that the county had purchased 5 acres of land adjoining the current facility for a new building, and moved to not only build there but to allow the county to seek bids for an 8,000 square foot facility.

The motion was later amended to limit the cost of engineering at $10,000.

Commissioner Luke Sweeney voted against the measure

In other business, the court:

  • approved the designation of five Census tracts as Opportunity Zone 2.0 Program tracts, making the area eligible for certain considerations for improvement;
  • approved a variance to allow a lot split in the Drury McGee survey for Jennifer Wragge; and
  • approved a revision to the Cape Royale subdivision plat.
