County discusses grant funding protocol

COLDSPRING — The San Jacinto County Commissioners Court developed plans to spend grant funds for projects based on damages from Hurricane Harvey.

At a workshop on Wednesday, the court determined that each precinct had approximately $3 million in grant funds available for road repair; however, not all precincts required as much work, leading to a discussion on how to divide the funds.

County Judge Fritz Faulkner said hiring contracts could be done by precinct, but to hire only one contractor means that the work would take much longer to finish. It was then suggested that instead of seeking contracts all at once, the county could seek bids for projects that were ready for work.

Some of the discussion also centered around incorrect measurements of the amount of road needing repair, leading Faulkner to say he hasn’t seen that many errors on a document in his time as judge.

Additionally, the county discussed the environmental aspect of the projects, as well as whether the funding will cover full projects or just partial.

Specific action was not taken, but the county will take up specific tasks at a future regular meeting.
