Summer Solstice was June 21, which was also Father's Day. We know it is summer; the heat has arrived in full force but so has rain which is keeping everything green in our county.
What else happened this last week?
Well, Shepherd Library drew the winners of the raffle. I was honored to be given the job of pulling the winning tickets. Winners were notified by phone. The results are on the Library Facebook page. The
The summer program ended this week and dinos were everywhere in the Library. I loved the presentation on top of the bookshelves. Dino eggs with hatching babies were adorable (if you like dinosaurs.) Pick up a monthly schedule from either Library for July, next time you are near.
Coldspring Library has a lot of events planned too.
After the service and Parade, events moved to Hopewell Center where lunch, including cake, was very welcome. Lillie Lunnon-Bosun was MC for this program which included songs by Valerie Dean, Ursula Thompson-Greenleaf and a concert from an amazing young man, W. Jace Michael, who has a wonderful voice, even more remarkable since he is only 12 years old. His family said he has been singing since he was one. Also featured were talks from Barbara Justice for the NAACP Polk County/San Jacinto County Branch. Barbara said they had been able to give over a dozen scholarships to students this year.
Dr. Dorian Richardson, a naturopathic physician based in Point Blank, talked about her practice, which blends conventional medical science with natural, evidence-based therapies. She emphasized the need to eat the right foods to allow our bodies to function at their best.
Margaret Williams spoke about the organization, Friends of Hopewell. In 1997 the old church was to be torn down. This building had been the hub of the African American community for more than 100 years. A group formed to save it although that proved to be too difficult.
The building that has taken its place still bears the stained-glass windows saved from the old one.
The Friends of Hopewell, a non-profit organization, have plans to use the center for projects and events honoring the history of those who created the original building. To know more call (281) 623-8766 or go to the website, friendsofhopewell.com
