Election 2024: School measures fail, new ESD district approved

COLDSPRING — Donald Trump won his presidential bid over Kamala Harris nationally and in San Jacinto County, but measures seeking additional funds for area schools failed in Tuesday’s general election.

All vote totals are unofficial until canvassed.

A ballot issue for Coldspring-Oakhurst CISD for a 9.63 percent increase in revenue by increasing the property tax rate to 80.67 cents per $100 valuation failed 4,603 to 2,837, according to San Jacinto County’s unofficial election results.

Three bond issues for the portion of the county in the Willis School District seeking a total of $115.4 million for a student activity center, an aquatics center and an athletic stadium complex were defeated by San Jacinto County voters almost three to one. The propositions also were rejected by Montgomery County voters.

In races for Shepherd ISD Board of Trustees, Daniel Landers won for Position 6 over Yvonne Johnson 1,961 to 782; and Brooke Rhoden won over Mark Davis, Johnny Migl and Melodee Arrendell with 1,393 votes to the others’ 623, 393 and 352 votes, respectively.

In the sole contested race for Shepherd City Council, William “Billy” Lacoste garnered 436 votes to win over Lisa Stockwell-Almazan with 155 and incumbent Yvonne Ryba Cones with 159. Shepherd Mayor Charles Minton received 604 votes in his unopposed re-election bid.

The question on whether to create a second Emergency Services District for the Waterwood subdivision was passed by voters 250-74.

At the state level for District 18 representative, Janis Holt received 10,279 county votes and 69,185 overall for the win. Her opponent, Seth Steele, received 1,627 votes in the county and 10,710 throughout the district.

At the federal level, incumbent U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz has 10,073 county votes (5,965,513 statewide) to challenger Colin Allred’s 1,521 (4,990,224 statewide) and retains his seat.

Incumbent U.S. Rep. Morgan Luttrell received 10,413 votes (232,848 district-wide) over opponent Laura Jones’ 2,079 county votes (108,078 district-wide) to keep his position.

Other county races:

•District Judge John Wells ran unopposed and was re-elected.

•Constables in all four precincts ran unopposed; taking office in January are Rae Lynn Phillips, Ray Atchley, Kevin Freed and Brian Cosme.

•Sam Houston will take office after receiving 10,632 votes and after a lawsuit contesting the primary election results was dismissed.

•Luke Sweeney received 2,746 votes in his uncontested bid for Precinct 1 County Commissioner, and Crystal Dominy received 2,363 votes in her uncontested race for Precinct 3 County Commissioner.

•Betty Davis was unopposed for County Tax Assessor-Collector, and received 11,274 votes.
