Early voting ends Friday for the May 26 runoff election.
The top two candidates from the March primary elections in races where no candidate won just more than 50 percent of the vote will face off to become their respective party’s nomination for the November general election.
The nomination most talked about by far has been for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senator from Texas, pitting incumbent John Cornyn against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
There also is a runoff for Attorney General, with candidates on both sides of the ticket ultimately seeking to replace Ken Paxton. For the Republicans, those candidates are U.S. Rep. Chip Roy, and Texas Sen. Mayes Middleton; for the Democrats, Joe Jaworski of Galveston and Texas Sen. Nathan Johnson of Dallas. The winners of these races will go on to face each other in the general election.
In San Jacinto County, the only local runoff is between incumbent County Treasurer Dee Dee Bailey and Cynthia “Cindy” McClure, each seeking the Republican nomination for the post. Since there are no Democratic candidates, the winner of the runoff will essentially win the race.
Other Democrat runoffs include Marcos Isaias Velez and Vikki Goodwin seeking the nomination for lieutenant governor.
On the GOP side, Jim Wright, incumbent and chair of the Railroad Commission, is facing off with Bo French for the nomination for the Railroad Commission; and Thomas Smith and Alison Fox are seeking the GOP nod for Place 4 on the Court of Criminal Appeals.
Early voting runs from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Thursday and Friday and will be held at the San Jacinto County Elections Administration building, 51 E. Pine Ave., in Coldspring.
The Elections office will be closed for Memorial Day May 25.
