Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.
We are well into our holiday season now, with Halloween behind us, and Christmas coming closer. There is a great choice of events for our area to enjoy. Town Lighting at the Courthouse Square will be on Saturday, Nov. 29, at 6 p.m. followed by the movie “Polar Express” at 6:30 p.m.
Vendors and food vendors will be there all day with entertainment and activities. The Senior Center will be open that day selling stuffed Baked Potatoes.
- Shepherd City Council swore in two incumbent aldermen at the meeting last week. Curtis Ainsworth and Ray Marrs took their oaths. The third winner of the election, Ms. Margaret Williams, was away due to a family emergency and will be sworn in soon at a future date.
- Coldspring Volunteer Fire Department assisted with the San Jacinto County Outreach Committee’s annual Thanksgiving Community Feast. So many volunteers helped with all the work and distribution. We are told it is better to give than receive, and this is a great example of that. Of course, it is also very good to receive donations given with such generosity.
- Coldspring Senior Center held its Thanksgiving Lunch on Friday, sponsored by Eastex Title. The cooks out did themselves with turkey and ham, sweet potatoes, green beams, stuffing and gravy with apple pie to follow. Thanks to the sponsors Eastex Title and the hard workers who decorated the tables and made the lunch a winner.
- The Brewtique in Shepherd will close its doors at the end of December. However, they are having a sale of 50 percent off all items and there are some great bargains to be had.
- Friends of Shepherd Library met last week to go over their recent fundraiser, Trivia Night, and to plan events for next year. We have wonderful volunteers in this group, which is a non-profit organization, but we can always have more.
If you like libraries, call in to see what is coming up and enjoy meeting some of the nicest folk. This goes for both libraries in our county. Coldspring Library also is holding different events and programs. Look them up on Facebook or their websites. Don't miss Breakfast with Santa in Coldspring Library on Dec. 6 at 9-10 a.m. Story time will be at 9.15 a.m.; it sounds like fun for the young ones.
- The Community Concert will be held in Coldspring at the San Jacinto Community Shelter on Dec. 20. This is a free concert with a combination of singers from nine churches. There will be more details about this upcoming community offering soon. It is hoped to increase the numbers attending this year so make a note in your diaries.
- Shepherd has decorated for Christmas. The tree beside the Gazebo in the park next to the Library is lit up, as are the street decorations and the city buildings. This is the park where the Shepherd Chamber will hold the Dec. 6 Christmas event and parade. To be a vendor, food vendor or Parade entrant, fill in the form you will find at either Shepherd Library or online at the website. Call the Chamber with any questions. Food vendors fee is $50, vendors $30, and the parade entrants $25.
Contact the Shepherd Chamber of Commerce at (210) 995-7420 or the Coldspring Chamber at (936) 653-2184.
