Expo helps residents help themselves in emergency

Posted

Are you ready for summer and the hurricane season?

Last Saturday, the Coldspring Shelter and parking lot were filled with tables of many organizations who help us all when we need them during such a crisis.

First responders, Coldspring Volunteer Fire Department, the Coldspring City Council, the Forestry Service departments and STEAR were on hand with giveaways and a great deal of information for residents.

STEAR is the State of Texas Emergency Assistance Registry. I collected a form to fill with my medical data and emergency contacts. I can register this with the registry and in case of an emergency, this will be on file for first responders. If you are interested, go online at stear.texas.gov or call 211.

Sheriff Sam Houston was there with his team and the Forestry Service was very well-represented. Inside the Center, Coldspring Mayor Pro Tem Dianne Griffith gave out info on the Coldspring Community Center behind the Courthouse.

The city has taken over the upkeep and maintenance of this building which will be rebuilt sometime next year. It needs some serious work on its structure.

• Browder’s 3278 Marina had a long overdue ribbon cutting last week. Browder’s has been a member of the Shepherd Chamber for years but are always busy with this very successful and uniquely located business.

The store boasts a restaurant, 56 RV sites, 37 tent sites and a playground, restrooms/showers, bait and storage has been in the Few family for 50 years and counting. It is the only RV Park with access to Lake Livingston and the Trinity River Dam.

Ideal for fishing and boating, this is a very popular place to visit for a few days or longer. Call (936) 653-3278 or go to their website. It is a very friendly place with staff who love to help.

• Shepherd and Coldspring libraries had a mix and mingle on Saturday afternoon. (It was a very busy day.) Staff and volunteers came together to talk, play Trivial Pursuit and eat from a delicious buffet thanks to Director Terri McIntyre and Marsha Brown. This was a great way to get to know each other and both groups plan to continue to support each other’s events.

Thanks to Vicki for running the Trivial Pursuit.

• It was Fish Friday at San Jacinto County Senior Center, sponsored by Direct Solutions. Cindy Davenport represented the firm; her office is based in Livingston and covers East Texas. It supplies janitorial supplies and services and has many clients in our area. Cindy’s office is located at 210 Pan American Drive, and the office number is (936) 327-3005.

Contact the Shepherd Chamber of Commerce at (210) 995-7420 or the Coldspring Chamber at (936) 653-2184.
