It is officially autumn, and cooler weather is gradually making working outdoors easier. Many people attended the San Jacinto Fair in Coldspring over last weekend and had a great time watching the roping while eating great food.
There was a lot more going on of course which I am sure this paper will tell you.
•Last Tuesday was voting for the Board of Directors at Coldspring Senior Center. As I mentioned before, the Center will go on its own from Oct. 1. Due to major cuts in their budget, they increased the price of senior lunches to $6 but will be able to sell meals to go for anyone who calls in to order them after that date.
The Board had four places with five applicants. Winners were Sue Jackson, Jo Clarady, Jerry Jones and Roger Samoff.
Fish Friday was sponsored by Alan Graves in honor of his late wife Deborah. Alan eats regularly at the Center where he enjoys the social atmosphere. Commissioners Crystal Dominy and Luke Sweeney visited the Center and met the crowd.
The Center holds Texercise classes three times a week, line dancing class on Tuesdays, bingo on Thursdays, and music and singing on Friday at lunch time. It hosts other events; look them up on Facebook or call (936) 653-4175.
Administrator Charline Smith told the diners that a few months back a young student, Kinsley Bailes, set up a project to collect prescription glasses for the Lions Club. Coldspring Senior Center collected 129 pairs. Kinsley decided to take on another project. She went to SJC Farm Bureau and asked if they would partner with her. So, with the help of local farmers and ranchers she made enough money to make it happen. The Coldspring and Shepherd senior centers received a whole steer and 500 pounds of hamburger meat. Way to go Kinsley.
•SJC Historical Commission will host the annual Haunted Jail on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1-2. Look for their billboard on Northbound 59 just past FM 2025. This is always a favorite with families. The building is the original Jail which also housed the jailer and his family downstairs. The cells are upstairs. More on this later.
•Friends of Shepherd Library will hold a fundraiser for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library Program and community programs. On Nov. 8 the second Trivia Night will take place in Coldspring Community Center. How can you help? You can donate items for the silent auction on that night or gift certificates from businesses, products to create gift baskets and gifts of cash are also welcome. Call (936) 628-3515 for more information.
•William LaCoste (Billy) owner of Texas Grill & Cafe in Shepherd will soon own Paradise Grille in Coldspring. Owner Paul Shelton wrote on Facebook that he needs to move on from the well-known restaurant and says he is leaving it in the very capable hands of Billy. The change will happen at the start of October, but the new owner says there will be no changes for the foreseeable future. He will change the name to Texas Grill. Mr. Shelton speaks highly of the new owner, and I know many will look forward to his success.
