COLDSPRING — In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day, and the calendar week in which it falls as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress, this solemn observance honors law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, serving and protecting their communities.

On May 15, San Jacinto County gathered to pay tribute to four of its own who gave their lives in service:

  • Deputy Hiram Jefferson Ritchey (1955)
  • Sgt. Danny F. Gallaway (2005)
  • Deputy Bryan Pfluger (2019)
  • Deputy Constable Neil Adams (2022)

The ceremony was opened with remarks from Sheriff Sam Houston and Dale Everitt, who spoke with reverence and gratitude for the fallen. A moving “Bell Ringing” tribute followed, honoring each officer. Family members and close friends were then invited to share heartfelt memories and reflections, offering a deeply personal glimpse into the lives and legacies of those we lost.

This annual memorial stands as a powerful reminder of the courage, commitment, and sacrifice of our law enforcement community. May their service never be forgotten.
