School is out but not before scholarships have been awarded and graduation ceremonies are completed. Shepherd High School had its scholarship evening last Tuesday.
Principal Danielle McCabe welcomed everyone and the senior class sponsors did a great job with the way each student was featured on screen and the donors were photographed afterward with the recipients.
Thank you, Ms. Courvelle and Ms. Harrison and Mr. Goodman.
Shepherd Chamber of Commerce gave $1,500 each to Elizabeth Coyle, Jacob Davis and Swaminaryan Rivero. It was a very good evening with lots of excitement and smiles as each one of the many award winners went up to the stage.
Congratulations to their teachers and the class of 2025.
• It is hard to believe June is almost here. There are many events in June, here are some of them.
SJC Republican Club will meet June 10 at their headquarters, 201 Highway 150 Suite J-L in Coldspring. The program is one which is important and affects the community. District Attorney Todd Dillon will discuss how his office is combatting child abuse as well as domestic abuse, as well as a representative of SAAFE House. This organization provides assistance to abused and battered women.
In addition, Josh Pauley, founder of Run Home First, will outline his group’s efforts to help children overcome the effects of neglect and abuse. They use sports as a mechanism to make them feel safe. This is a national organization, and this local operation is the only affiliate in Texas thus far. The meeting of this informative program starts at 6 p.m.
Juneteenth will be celebrated by Friends of Hopewell in Coldspring and will last over the weekend of June 20-21. On June 20 at 7 p.m., the Goffney Brothers sing at the GRRCH Church. On June 21 at 9 a.m., the Friends of Hopewell will give the Emancipation Proclamation followed by the Juneteenth Parade at the Coldspring Courthouse. This is sponsored by Polk-San Jacinto NAACP. At 11 a.m. that day, the community celebration for Juneteenth will be at Hopewell Center, Highway 156 and Perry Drive, in Coldspring. This will feature The Quilt Lady displaying quilts with symbols of the Underground Railroad Route. There will be barbecue and fixin’s, chat and fun. On June 15, Friends of Hopewell will commemorate Juneteenth with a variety of activities and events. More on this soon.
• Coldspring ESD. met last week to conduct business. Quite a crowd came to hear what plans were being made and there was interesting information on training including how to break down doors in burning buildings.
• Last week, a veteran and former prisoner of war, Ellis Williamson, attended the Veterans Coffee Morning at the Coldspring Methodist Fellowship Church. Judge Travis Kitchens and Dale Everitt spoke to the crowd. This amazing veteran is 102 years old.
Kitchens spoke about Williamson’s long, eventful life. Although he was in a wheelchair, he stood for the National Anthem and Pledge.
