I see that we are less than a month away from putting our clocks forward. Time flies, doesn’t it?

Last week, a group of residents of our county traveled to Austin as guests of our State Rep. Janis Holt and Sen. Charles Schwertner for a visit to the Capitol. The visit included a tour of the building, a delicious lunch from the senator, talks with questions and a visit to the offices of our representative.

Everyone enjoyed themselves tremendously. Dwayne Wright, who is serving as Holt’s Chief of Staff, was able to meet up with his wife, Dawn. Dawn is our County Clerk. You will recognize many of those in the photograph. The occasion was San Jacinto County’s birthday, and this is an annual event in which everybody is welcome.

• Coldspring Garden Club enjoyed the guest speaker, Jean McNemar. The talk was titled “Dancing Bees” and included advice about the use of pesticides in our gardens. We were told to be very careful what we use that may kill or injure bees. These wonderful insects are responsible for a great deal of the food that we eat.

In fact, many farms and orchards rent beehives for the several weeks when they need the bees to pollinate them. Jean brought jars of honey for the club members. Other members brought refreshments and drinks.

• Shepherd First Baptist Church has a list of dates when Houston Food Bank will be delivering to the new church’s food store. It is expected that the Food Truck will visit on Feb. 14 and 21, Feb. 24 and March 3. I picked up the flyer about this at People’s State Bank in Shepherd. The Rev. Chester Holloway can be reached at (936) 628-3130.

• Friends of Shepherd Library are holding a fundraiser on Feb. 22 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. This will be a Chili Cook-off with some very innovative recipes. One includes ground venison, ground moose and beef with diced uncured bacon, spices and tomato sauce, etc. Sounds very interesting.

This event will be in the park, next door to the Shepherd Library. There will be music. Come out and meet your friends and neighbors. The same day also, there will be a county-wide garage sale and many activities. Visit SanJacintoCountyBulletinBoard.com for information on upcoming events.

• Don’t forget to vote for Best of San Jacinto County Awards. Visit the Coldspring Chamber for info on this event. Ballots may be emailed or dropped off at the Coldspring Chamber.
