Coldspring Library celebrated in style on Saturday. “40 years and Growing” was the theme for the day and many people came out to help congratulate and celebrate with the library staff, board and volunteers.
The present building has been there for the last 23 years. Before that it started out as smaller building donated by Evergreen Baptist Church and moved to Old Town on Slade Street. With growth, a bigger building was needed so the city donated land next door to City Hall. This is where the building stands today, although the library is launching a Building Fundraising Campaign to pay for the needed improvements caused by settling of the structure. This library is a great asset to the community and support is asked for and welcomed.
Mayor John Benestante and Mayor Pro Tem Dianne Griffith began the proceedings with a proclamation about the library’s 40th anniversary. The director and board president welcomed everyone to the refreshments inside and the open house was a delightful mixture of events. The Hot Steppers performed outside while inside the history of the library with albums and photos over the years showed its growth. Thanks go to the Board President Marsha Brown and the board members for this incredible array.
•The San Jacinto County Democratic Party had its monthly meeting at the Family Restaurant in Shepherd. They meet every second Tuesday of the month. Chair Dennis Ready laid out plans for the future and distributed information on the many Texas Propositions which will be voted on in the upcoming election. Everyone enjoyed the buffet prepared by The Family Restaurant. Thank you, Walterine Carr and her team, for this.
•The San Jacinto County Republican Club met on the same day and time, with Chairman Dwayne Wright being the speaker.
•Earlier on Tuesday Coldspring Chamber of Commerce held their quarterly luncheon at Coldspring Community Center. Two sets of speakers informed a full house of their services to the community.
First, SAAFE House’s Terri Hackl spoke about how the organization works to prevent family violence and sexual assault. They offer individualized, immediate, free and confidential services. They have a hotline and a Facebook page with a great deal of information.
Kloe Baker, a crisis intervention advocate, reminded us they have an office in the Coldspring Chamber building. They need more volunteers to help with their work, a few hours a week or just a few times, there are many opportunities to help. In SJC call (936) 284-5560.
The other speakers were from the Small Business Development Center at Sam Houston State University. John Fletcher and Jessica reminded the guests of the many free webinars held on subjects from training, managing computer programs, acquiring loans and grants and much more. Call John Fletcher at the office at (936) 294-3111.
Owners were invited to speak about their businesses. Wright Way Plumbing told us we now had a local plumber and Pirate Tech owner, Ryan Dampier, is available to solve all computer problems from programming to those horrible times when things don’t work for no obvious reason. Again, look online and Facebook for them.
Contact the Shepherd Chamber of Commerce at (210) 995-7420 or the Coldspring Chamber at (936) 653-2184.
