SHEPHERD —An overlooked cooling unit at Shepherd Intermediate School will be replaced, but for an additional cost to the current project to upgrade the district’s cooling systems.

At the Thursday meeting of the ISD Board of Managers, J.W. Kirkham, the district Chief Financial Officer, said that a 40-ton unit that runs on R22 coolant wasn’t included in the bid to replace the system as it wasn’t a problem at the time.

However, the unit began failing, and R22 coolant is no longer available for use because of federal regulations. A replacement unit using a newer type of coolant is available, and at half the price of a unit using the currently recommended coolant of R54V.

Additionally, the district can stockpile refrigerant to ensure the longevity of the new system.

Cost for the unit will be $143,000, which was approved.

In a related manner, the board approved installation of a generator for the district administration building at a cost of $183,000.

In other business, managers:

  • approved a sanitary control easement for the well on 1 Pirate Lane;
  • approved changes to the district compensation plan to change the title of one position and create a new job description; and
  • approved the selection of Peoples State Bank as the district depository for the next two years. Member John Few abstained from the vote.
