SHEPHERD — The Shepherd ISD Board of Managers were updated on the district’s plan to change to a strategic compensation plan to one that rewards teachers for success.

At the regular meeting on Thursday, Kriste Davis, Regional Assistant Superintended for Talent, said that the plan is designed to keep good teachers in the district while attracting others.

Davis said that for the current year, the district lost 35 teachers, 11 of which did not finish the previous teacher year. Additionally, she said that of the 130 teachers in the district, 89 commute from other areas; of the 26 administrators, 18 live outside the district.

She pointed out that leads to turnover, so they were looking to spend payroll funds differently by creating an Enhanced Teacher Incentive Allotment, becoming the only district in ESC Region 6 to do so. Instead of having three levels of compensation, there will be eight, all designed to grow teachers and step up compensation.

That compensation will be tied to performance and could mean adjustments to salaries across the board. Davis pointed out that based on recent evaluations, 12 teachers zero to 37 percent student growth, while 11 had 50 to 80 percent student growth, which is the area the teachers should be striving for, but also those 11 left the district.

No action was taken.

In other business, members:

  • approved a travel form for FFA members to attend the National FFA convention in Indianapolis in October;
  • approved a proposed class size waiver;
  • approved a district-wide camera upgrade;
  • approved district-wide installation of cafeteria braziers;
  • approved a district-wide intercom system;
  • approved the purchase of 65 interactive flat panels at a cost of $220,000; and
  • accepted the slate of unopposed school board candidates, which include Melodee Arrendell, Sherrill Aaron and Michael Courvelle, and approved the cancellation of the board election.
