SHEPHERD — In the early morning hours on Wednesday, Deputies with the San Jacinto County Sheriff’s Office were in the Shepherd area clearing a call for service and conducting a patrol when they drove through the Shepherd Travel Center.

While on the property, deputies were flagged down by an individual requesting assistance. Reports indicate deputies made contact with the male, later identified as German Turrubiartes, and during the brief interaction it became apparent that Turrubiartes was unlawfully carrying a handgun in his waistband.

Deputies also observed behavior and mannerisms indicating that Turrubiartes was not in full control of his mental and physical faculties, creating concern for the safety of both himself and those around him. Based on the circumstances, deputies placed Turrubiartes under arrest for unlawful carrying of a weapon.

According to reports, Turrubiartes was taken to a search area to be processed into the facility. As is standard procedure, he was temporarily unhandcuffed so that a proper search could be conducted prior to booking and he could be dressed out. At that moment, Turrubiartes immediately became violent and began fighting with staff, striking a detention officer in the face.

Turrubiartes then was said to begin fighting with the patrol sergeant who had arrested him, striking the sergeant multiple times while making threats that he was going to kill him. Additional members of the San Jacinto County Sheriff’s Office quickly responded to the area and were able to safely regain control of Turrubiartes and secure him back into custody.

As a result of his actions, German Turrubiartes was charged with:

  • aggravated assault on a public servant
  • assault on a public servant
  • terroristic threat against a public servant
  • unlawful carrying of a weapon

All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
