First, let me thank Linda Deeter for being such a great help to me last week. She is a very busy lady, but she volunteered to get the column out while I was (and still am) getting over double pneumonia. I thank everyone who sent me prayers and support. We have a great community.

We are getting into the swing of things now with lots of events coming up. On Jan. 20 at 11 a.m., Friends of Hopewell celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day at the Hopewell Community Center at 166 Perry Drive in Coldspring, just past Lincoln Jr. High. There will be music, speakers, arts and crafts and displays and more. Call (713) 816-2429 for more info.

Wrap up well, it is going to be cold this week.

• The Small Business Development Center is offering a whole host of classes for business owners, online and in-person. Go to the Facebook page or website. You can find information on how to use programs online, where to go for help in many situations and most of it is free or very inexpensive. Look up sbdcinfo@uh.edu.

• Both libraries, Coldspring and Shepherd, are very busy with events and programs. Coldspring is celebrating its 40th anniversary. Go to their Facebook page, they have a lot coming up. Shepherd Library will have ‘It’s Tea Time.’ on Jan. 24 at 3 p.m. Call (936) 628-3515. Don’t forget your hat.

• Coldspring Chamber of Commerce has changed the date for the Best of San Jacinto Banquet to March 1. Voting has also been extended, got to the website for more information. Shepherd Chamber will soon be starting Scholarship Entries for High School students graduating this year. Watch for the information soon.

• The Reagan Dinner will be on Feb. 22 at 6 p.m. in the SJC Shelter in Coldspring. Keynote speaker and podcaster Chad Prather will attend. A delicious meal, a live and silent auction and great speakers will make it an evening to remember. Tickets are $75, $100 for a couple.

• The SJC Democratic Party met Jan. 14 at the Family Restaurant & Daiquiris to Go in Shepherd. Chair Dennis Ready introduced our new Sheriff Sam Houston, who talked about the current state of the Jail and plans to build another. More space is needed to house inmates, currently there are 55, and Sheriff Houston said they needed more jailers and another three detectives. Jailers earn about $35,000 to $40,000.

The Sheriff said he wanted to make sure everyone understood he wants to be the Sheriff for everyone. With him was his Chief Deputy Stan Jolley. Sam also spoke about the Dog Rescue Shelter and said more volunteers were needed to help with this. His wife Sandra runs the Shelter and if you would like to volunteer a few hours a week there, call (281) 450-3676.

Contact the Shepherd Chamber of Commerce at (210) 995-7420 or the Coldspring Chamber at (936) 653-2184.

Yvonne Cones is president of the Shepherd Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Coldspring Chamber of Commerce.
