Trash talk ends with no resolution

COLDSPRING — After two votes and several rounds of discussion, the Sanitation Department will remain with Precinct 2 County Commissioner Donnie Marrs.

At the Wednesday meeting, the San Jacinto County Commissioners Court discussed moving the Sanitation Department out from under District 2 Road Department. Marrs said that he has run it for some time, but with elections coming up, he said it would be a good time for another commissioner to get their feet wet.

Marrs is up for re-election.

County Judge Fritz Faulkner said he did not feel there was a need for the transfer, but if need be, changes could be made after the election in November; however, Commissioner Crystal Dominy said she would have no problem taking over the responsibility.

Marrs, who has been handling the department for 13 years, said that there was more to running that department that is readily apparent.

“There’s more to this than you think, because if one of those drivers don’t show up, one of the other employees has to fill in,” Marrs said. “But there’s a time you get tired of the nitpicking.”

Commissioner Mark Nettuno motioned to table, but there was no second until Faulkner offered it. That vote went 2 for and 2 against, with Marrs abstaining. Sweeney then moved to have Dominy take it over, seconded by Dominy, but the votes did not favor that.

In other business, commissioners:

  • approved a construction contract of $477,477 for drilling a deep well and pump No. 5 for the Point Blank and Stephens Creek WSC from a Texas Department of Agriculture grant;
  • approved applications for bids for road repairs funded by GLO grants;
  • approved the donation of $12,000 from residents of Emerald Pointe for paving of Admiralty Way;
  • approved the purchase of two night laser aiming devices at $2,250 apiece; three night vision goggles at $7,799; and three helmets at $355, paid for through the Operation Lone Star Grant;
  • approved the purchase of 33 mobile radios; and
  • approved an agreement with the Statewide Interoperability Coordinator for use of office space.
