Trojans out-hit New Waverly, but fall short in district battle

The Coldspring Trojans put together a strong offensive on March 31, but despite outhitting New Waverly 11-10, they came up short in an 8-4 loss.

Coldspring got off to a solid start, taking an early lead in the bottom of the first inning. Jacob Ash reached and helped plate a run with the help of a New Waverly error, and James Clark followed with a groundout RBI to give the Trojans a 2-0 advantage.

New Waverly responded in the third inning, tying the game behind a key double from Jaxon Hathorn. The Trojans answered right back in the bottom half, as Jacoby Johnson delivered an RBI single to push Coldspring back in front, 4-3.

The back-and-forth battle continued into the fourth, when Peyton Raley singled to even the score once again at 4-4. New Waverly then took control in the fifth inning, as Jayce Wells drove in the go-ahead run with a single, giving the Bulldogs a 5-4 lead they would not relinquish.

On the mound, Brayden Sherman went the distance for Coldspring, working six innings while allowing 10 hits and eight runs. At the plate, Coldspring’s lineup produced consistently, with McCall Hilton, Jacob Ash, and James Clark each recording two hits. Sherman, Ash, and Clark each drove in a run, while Ethan Hamilton added pressure on the basepaths with two stolen bases.

On Friday, the Coldspring Trojans faced a tough New Waverly lineup that continued to apply pressure throughout a 9-1 loss.

The Bulldogs jumped out early, scoring two runs in the first inning and adding to their lead in each of the next two frames. By the third inning, New Waverly had built a 4-0 advantage and never looked back. Jordan Ash got the start for Coldspring, battling through 5⅓ innings against a relentless offense that finished with 16 hits on the night.

Jacoby Johnson accounted for the Trojans’ lone RBI, while Wade Currie, Brayden Sherman, and Johnson each recorded a hit. Defensively, Coldspring remained steady, playing a clean game without committing an error. Hamilton led the effort in the field with seven chances.
