Two subjects, two creative teachers

COLDSPRING — Coldspring Intermediate School students are benefiting from the unique backgrounds, experience, and collaborative approach of science teachers Justin Jackson and Amy Perryman.

A Coldspring graduate, Jackson returned home to Coldspring-Oakhurst CISD after teaching in Spring ISD, where he taught advanced engineering courses to students with extensive background knowledge in the subject. Since joining CIS as a fifth-grade teacher, Jackson has embraced the opportunity to work with a younger age group, adapting his approach and tailoring instruction to engage and challenge the district’s young scientists.

Perryman began her career in COCISD as a Reading Language Arts teacher and brought an impressive background in reading and writing with her to the CIS science classroom. She has successfully integrated those skills into science instruction, helping students strengthen their ability to analyze scientific texts, comprehend complex concepts, and clearly communicate their understanding through writing. Her students are learning that strong literacy skills play an important role in becoming successful scientists and critical thinkers.

Together, Jackson and Perryman have worked closely with Science Instructional Coach Melanie Jackson to refine and adjust the science curriculum to meet the unique needs of COCISD students. Through collaboration, creativity, and a shared commitment to student growth, the team is creating meaningful learning experiences that build both scientific knowledge and the critical-thinking skills students will carry with them throughout their education.

•Coldspring-Oakhurst High School is celebrating outstanding growth in student achievement, earning an 86 (B) accountability rating — the first B rating earned by a COCISD campus since the A-F accountability system began in 2018.

The accomplishment reflects the hard work and dedication of COHS students and staff, with significant gains across multiple areas, including a 24-point increase in Closing the Gaps and strong growth in English, Algebra I, Biology, and College, Career and Military Readiness.

After laying a strong foundation last year, COHS continues to demonstrate that focused effort and high expectations are producing meaningful results for students.
