County renames military exhibit

COLDSPRING — The San Jacinto County Commissioners Court allowed a name change for its military exhibit to better attract visitors.

At the April 29 meeting, Commissioners Mark Nettuno, Crystal Dominy and Luke Sweeney approved the new name — San Jacinto County, Texas Military Museum, at the request of Dale Everitt, the county’s Veterans Services Officer.

County Judge Fritz Faulkner and Commissioner Donnie Marrs were absent.

Everitt said the SJC Historical Commission requested the name change because internet searches were turning up museums in other areas, such as the HEARTS Veterans Museum in Huntsville.

He also said it would impact tourism in the area, getting the correct location instead of the San Jacinto County that is in California.

In other business, the commissioners:

  • approved Faulkner’s resignation from Burke Center board and replaced him with Commissioner Luke Sweeney. His service conflicted with the County Court’s misdemeanor docket;
  • approved the use of the Courthouse Square for a car show;
  • approved seeking bids for construction related to an improvement grant for road repairs;
  • approved revisions to the subdivision plat for several properties in Waterwood to allow lot combinations;
  • delayed adoption of a high load facility impact permit policy;
  • accepted four truckloads of crushed limestone for work on Oakridge Road;
  • approved the final replat for Ponderosa Estates;
  • approved a variance for lot split on Denson Allen Road;
  • approved designation of items as surplus to be sold at auction;
  • approved the purchase of 25 stop stick kits at a cost of $20,325 and similar amount of in-car printers at a cost of $13,946.94 to be paid for from SB 22 grant funds; and
  • approved two donations totaling $130 for the Animal Control Center.
