Chester ‘Big Homecoming’ this weekend; ‘Jackets take on Union Hill Bulldogs

The Yellowjacket football team took a three-hour drive North to Gilmer to face the Union Hill Bulldogs on Friday, Sept. 20.

The Jackets found themselves behind early, but fought hard to keep the game alive. Turner Johnson went 11 for 15 passing for 170 yards and three touchdown passes. Jaxon Gay had nine carries for 35 yards, eight catches for 133 receiving yards and scored two touchdowns. Gay also had 11 tackles, one blocked extra point attempt, and one interception. Jesse Bittick had seven tackles, Clay Busey five tackles. Kasen Citrano had three tackles with a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and one touchdown reception.

Ultimately the Jackets could not catch up to the Bulldogs and ended with a 20-54 loss.

This week Chester High School will celebrate its “Big Homecoming”, which is held every three years. The schedule for this week is as follows: Thursday, Sept. 26 7 p.m. Bonfire by the baseball field, Friday, Sept. 27.

For the “Big Homecoming” game, the Jackets will host Oakwood at 7 p.m. at Aubry Bradley Stadium.

During halftime classes from 1972, 1973 and 1974 will be recognized. The Homecoming Court Coronation will also take place at halftime and a new queen will be crowned by the reigning 2023 Queen Kinsley Barnes.

The Chester High School Homecoming Queen candidates for 2024 are: Abby Grimes escorted by Waylon Sturrock, Lily Read escorted by Cutter Lowe, Kyli Handley escorted by Hunter Luther and Sydney Brock escorted by Clay Busey. Other members of the court are Freshman Duchess TanaLyn Knox escorted by JT Duncan, Sophomore Duchess Hailey Purvis escorted by Chandler Brock, Junior Duchess Marae Pounds escorted by Rex Gilzow and Children of the Court are Ava Handley, TW Neal, Dallie Walker and Easton Walker. Saturday, Sept. 28 at 10:30 a.m. there will be a 70’s themed parade starting at city park and ending at the high school. Opal Philmon Handley is recognized as this years Parade Marshal.

Mrs. Handley just celebrated her 100th birthday and is a 1941 graduate of Chester High School.

After the parade, at 11:30 a.m. the Alumni Association will hold a meeting in the cafeteria.

The Booster Club will also be in the cafeteria with jambalaya lunch for donations with proceeds benefiting all athletic teams.

All guests are encouraged to visit the library where there will be pictures, memorabilia, and yearbooks available for reminiscing and fellowship.
