CHESTER – Chester Mayor Robert Poynter signed a proclamation supporting April as Tyler County Child Abuse Prevention Month at their regular meeting Monday evening, April 7.

Pct 1 Justice of the Peace Tina Self was present to support the proclamation, and she has been active with the Tyler County Child Welfare Board for over 20 years.

The proclamation recognized several sad statistics, including 53k child victims with 99 child deaths in Texas, and Tyler County had 242 reports, 49 confirmed abuses, with nine children removed in 2024.

Good news, in a way, eight children were adopted and six were reunited to their families.

With the entire month dedicated, April 27 was designated as “Blue Sunday” to bring attention to child abuse nationwide. Do notice the display on corner of the Tyler County Courthouse designed to help bring attention to the needs of children and to those trying to protect children.

City Secretary Balela Weaver noted a few behind in payments to the Chester Gas Company, and she pointed out one had a severe illness and that a good citizen had come forward to help.

The council approved a bid to fix the roof and gutter system.

The council approved the financials and the budgets for the city and for the Chester Gas Company for the coming year.
