ANDERSON — On a rainy evening filled with fluctuating start times due to the weather, the Coldspring Trojans boarded their buses and headed to Anderson for their final meeting of the season against the Owls.
It turned out to be the second of two losses to Anderson-Shiro on the week; Coldspring fell 18-1.
Coldspring got off to a promising start by putting the first run on the board in the opening inning. However, that would be their only tally of the night. The Owls responded in dominant fashion, scoring consistently to secure a decisive victory. They posted six runs in the first inning, five in the second, and seven in the third, setting the tone for the game.
“Overall, it was just an off night for the team,” said Coach Austin Riddell.
Kaden Hubbard started on the mound for the Trojans but was relieved by multiple players throughout the game. Riddell said, “We had to put some players on the mound that haven’t pitched much in quite a while, and it showed.”
The Trojans’ pitching staff struggled, issuing 11 walks over the course of the game.
Despite the tough loss, a few Trojans had notable performances at the plate. McCade Hilton went 1-for-2 and scored the team’s lone run in the first inning. Brennan Headley and Wade Currie also went 1-for-2, with Currie adding a double and an RBI.
After the game, Riddell didn’t shy away from acknowledging the team’s shortcomings. “We lost in every phase of the game — pitching, hitting, fielding, and energy,” he said.
In the March 25 game, the Trojans fought hard to keep the win at home, but the final outcome was a 9-3 loss at the hands of the Owls. Anderson struck first, scoring a run in the second inning. However, Coldspring responded quickly with three runs in the third inning, maintaining their lead through the fourth.
The Owls managed to tie the game in the fifth inning on a blooper infield hit, bringing the score to 3-3. The battle remained deadlocked until the seventh and final inning when a combination of errors and several pitching changes allowed Anderson to surge ahead with a six-run inning, securing a 9-3 victory. The Trojans were unable to rally in the bottom of the seventh, giving Anderson a crucial district win.
With this victory, Anderson now sits atop the district standings, while Coldspring and Onalaska are tied for second place.
McCade Hilton delivered a strong performance on the mound, holding the Owls to just one hit and three runs over 5.2 innings. He struck out 14 batters but allowed five walks. After Hilton ran out of gas, the Trojans turned to a series of relievers, including Nolan Beaver, Kaden Hubbard, and Jordan Ash.
At the plate, Jordan Ash went 1-for-3 and scored a run, while Kaden Hubbard finished 1-for-2. Nolan Beaver also went 1-for-3, adding an RBI and a run. Brennan Headley matched that stat line, going 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run of his own. Wade Currie rounded out the offense with a 1-for-3 night, driving in a run.
