Criminal Justice courses expand at Livingston High School

Spotlight on Career & Technical Education

Livingston High School students are offered many opportunities in the criminal justice field. Instructor Mr. Young teaches four Career & Technical Education dual credit courses to freshman and sophomore students through Lamar State College-Orange. There are two classes of Law Enforcement I and Principles of Law. The other Career & Technical Education courses in criminal justice include Law Enforcement 2 and Counseling & Mental Health. Young shares, ' I appreciate everything Mr.

Thornton, LHS CTE Coordinator, does for our program.

I'm proud of how much the program has grown and of how well the students lead in their roles. '

Criminal Justice students share information about the different competitions in which they participate.

Eleventh grader Meyah Escobedo is taking Law Enforcement II this year. She received her first aid and CPR certification last year and is the student lead for mock trial competitions.

LHS Senior Brianna Nelson is a third-year criminal justice student who plans to major in psychology next year at Navarro College. Last year, Nelson took the counseling and mental health course and spent time researching the Darlie Routier case by watching interview videos and studying her body language during the trial.

Senior Ethan McWhorter participates in mock trial competitions through the Dallas Bar Association. He looks forward to receiving the Mock Trial case in October. The LHS students will work with local attorneys in preparation for the February competition.

LHS Senior Hayden Carr is the leader of the SWAT team competition. Carr also uses a robot with a camera for rover investigations.

This year, LHS will have two teams competing in the spring.

LHS will host the regional TEPSA competition. LHS senior Sandra Gutierrez serves as the criminal justice chief deputy, which is the student lead of the whole program. She also competes on both the cell extraction team and in crash investigations.

Senior Jeweleanna Aguilar draws out crime scene investigations.

After reading a case, she sketches out the outline of the crime scene including the case number and location. She creates a legend of key evidence found, a call log and an evidence recovery log.
