Groveton, Apple Springs end postseason journey

GRAPELAND — After claiming a huge first-round bi-district win over West Hardin on Nov. 5, Groveton lost 3 against Frankston in the area round of the 2A D1 2024 Volleyball Tournament on Friday.

Scores against West Hardin were 25-27, 23-25, 25-23, 25-19 and 12-15.

Scores against Frankston were 16-25, 23-25 and 22-25.

Head Coach Laura Fajardo said Darbi Parker and Caila Antley had a great defensive game against Frankston, while Kady Lee provided block touches from the front.

Meanwhile, on Nov. 4, the Apple Springs Lady Eagles traveled to Palestine to compete for 1A Regions 3 and 4 2024 Volleyball Bi-District game, but lost to Trinidad 3-1.

Head Coach Denise Browning said the team had a slow start in the first set losing 10-25 and lost the second set 17-25.

The team fought back with a nail-biting win in the third set 27-25, Browning said, and led the majority of the fourth set, but because of service errors were not able to come back and lost 22-25.

Lauren Lankford dominated the front row with 11 kills and a block; Abrie McWhorter led the team with 19 assists, and a 90 percent serving rate with 5 of those aces; Katie Davis was also a leader behind the line with an 85 percent serving rate with 3 of those aces; Brooke Brister led the team with serve receive passes; and Jade Aycock led the team with 12 digs.
