The Yellowjacket baseball team continues to roll through opponents, starting the week with a perfect game defeating the Colmesneil Bulldogs 10-0 on Tuesday, Feb. 25.
Senior Will Thomason earned the win on the bump striking out nine, no walks, zero hits, and zero runs over four innings. Rex Gilzow went two for three at bats. Thomason and Gilzow each drove in two runs. Bryson Swanson, Jesse Bittick, and Turner Johnson each drew two walks. Swanson had two stolen bases.
The Jackets continued to take care of business at the Latexo tournament. On Thursday, Feb. 27, the Jackets beat Latexo 11-6. Turner Johnson earned the win giving up two hits, four runs, three strikeouts and two walks. Cutter Lowe appeared in relief. Rex Gilzow led in RBI’s with three. Lowe and Will Thomason each had two hits. Bryson Swanson stole two bases. Later that day the Jackets tied with Oakwood 2-2 due to time running out. Waylon Sturrock pitched, allowing four hits, two runs, 7 strikeouts, and four walks over five innings. Turner Johnson led RBI’s with one. Bryson Swanson also collected a hit.
On Friday, February 28 the Jackets beat Slocum 4-0 in the same tournament. Jesse Bittick had a showing on the bump with 12 strikeouts, zero hits, zero runs, and one walk over five and one third innings. This showing earned him “Diamond Pro Pitcher of the Week” by Texas High School Baseball. Will Thomason hit a triple, scoring two runs. Thomason and Waylon Sturrock each had two hits.
This week the Jackets will host their own tournament on March 6-8. Game times and schedule will be announced later in the week on the Yellowjacket Buzz Facebook page due to teams entered being in the basketball state finals.
The Lady Jacket softball team participated in the Blues Brothers Scholarship Tournament this past weekend. They faced teams from Cushing, Grapeland, Waskom, Hudson, Woden and Cayuga.
The Lady Jackets picked up a 4-3 win vs Cushing with help from Tegan Toler hitting a solo home run.
The Lady Jackets also beat Waskom 14-5. Lauren Citrano drove in four runs on three hits, doubling in the first inning scoring two, and hitting a single in the second inning, scoring another two. Lily Read, Marae Pounds, Tegan Toler, and Carlen Sluga each collected multiple hits. Allie Ogden earned the win giving up zero hits, and zero runs, two strikeouts, and no walks. Carlen Sluga also helped in the circle.
The Lady Jackets will host Colmesneil on March 4 and on Friday, March 7 they will travel to Diboll with a 5 p.m. start time.
