COLDSPRING — The Lady Trojans basketball team hosted Pineywoods Christian Academy on Tuesday night, where they secured a decisive victory.
The Lady Wolves struggled to find their rhythm, managing only single-digit scores until midway through the first quarter. The Lady Trojans took control from the outset, with the game nearly decided within the first few seconds.
Madison Harden set the tone early, delivering a well-placed pass to a teammate that led to the game’s opening score. Coach Monique Whittaker emphasized that the game provided valuable practice for honing skills and mastering the fundamentals.
“We can use this game to sharpen our skills and work on the basics,” she said. “This is a very young team with only a few seniors, but they’re willing to work at getting better, and you can’t teach that.”
Whittaker said that a few players have yet to join the team as they’re still participating in volleyball playoffs, but she’s optimistic about their eventual contributions. The Lady Trojans ended the game with an impressive 51-25 score.
Leading the charge was A’Layla Goffney, who posted 20 points, including a three-pointer, and who dominated in the paint all night. A’Layla shared her motivation: “I am playing in honor of my grandmother, Mrs. Cedell Goffney, who passed away earlier this month. She was my biggest supporter.”
Madison Harden also contributed significantly with 14 points, including two three-pointers, while Akiah Harwig added 9 points. The Lady Trojans showed remarkable discipline on the court, accumulating only eight fouls and avoiding any technical fouls.
Looking ahead, Whittaker said the team faces a challenging season with a competitive district lineup, which includes strong teams like New Waverly and Anderson-Shiro.
