COLDSPRING — On Nov. 12, the Lady Trojans hosted Grapeland in an intense pre-district girls’ basketball game. Although Coldspring had a slow start, they staged an impressive comeback in the final quarter but ultimately fell just one point short of victory.
The first quarter was dominated by Grapeland, who pulled ahead with an 18-8 lead. Coldspring managed to add 5 points in the second quarter, but Grapeland responded with 11 more, extending their lead. By halftime, Grapeland held a commanding 29-13 advantage, with Coldspring trailing by 16 points. Hines led the Lady Trojans in the first half, scoring seven points.
During the halftime break, Coldspring regrouped and emerged determined to close the gap. Slowly but surely, the Lady Trojans began to chip away at Grapeland’s lead. By the start of the fourth quarter, they had narrowed the deficit to 13 points, bringing the score to 38-41. Grapeland fought to maintain their lead, but with just 4:01 left on the clock, Coldspring had brought the score to 38-43.
In a heart-pounding final minute, Coldspring made a last push and brought the score to an astonishing 47-49 with 47 seconds left. With a chance to tie, one of the Lady Trojans was sent to the free-throw line. She made one of two attempts, bringing the score to 48-49, but it wasn’t enough to seal a win.
On Friday, the Coldspring Lady Trojans hosted the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears in a non-district basketball game. The matchup against the 4A powerhouse allowed the Lady Trojans to test new strategies and refine their playbook in anticipation of district competition.
The first quarter was a challenging start for the Lady Trojans, who managed just 3 points, all contributed by Camiyah Hines, including one from the foul line. Despite the early struggles, the Lady Trojans began to find their rhythm in the second quarter. Jazlyn Major and Robin Richard each added two points, while Alayla Goffney provided a spark with five points, bringing the team’s halftime total to nine.
The second half showcased a much-improved performance on both ends of the court. The Lady Trojans posted 12 points in the third quarter, followed by their highest-scoring effort with 13 points in the final quarter.
The Lady Trojans are eagerly awaiting the return of players from the volleyball team to complete their roster and bolster their performance on the hardwood. With the lessons learned from this tough non-district test, the Lady Trojans are well on their way to sharpening their skills for the challenges of district play.
Shepherd
The Lady Pirates were downed by the Trinity Lady Tigers 46-30 on Nov. 12.
The game was marked by low scores and a 2-point third quarter which Shepherd couldn’t overcome.
On Friday, Shepherd squeaked by West Fork 31-30.
Initially down 18-10, the Lady Pirates stormed back in the third by outscoring the Lady Gators 3 to 1.
