COLDSPRING — The Jan. 14 game proved to be a challenging outing for the Lady Trojans basketball team as they lost 67-46 to the New Waverly Lady Bulldogs.

Entering the game with an impressive 3-0 record, the Lady Trojans aimed to maintain their undefeated streak. However, the night ended with the two teams tied in district standings at 3-1, as the Lady Bulldogs secured a decisive victory.

The game started with a competitive first quarter, where Coldspring trailed by eight points, 19-11. Unfortunately, momentum shifted further in favor of New Waverly during the second quarter, with the Lady Bulldogs extending their lead to 36-18 by halftime.

One of the most significant factors in the game was New Waverly’s dominance from beyond the arc. The Lady Bulldogs racked up an impressive nine 3-pointers, creating a seemingly insurmountable gap whenever the Lady Trojans attempted to rally. Despite their determination, the Lady Trojans struggled to convert critical shots, a challenge that ultimately impacted the outcome of the game.

Alayla Goffney stood out for Coldspring, delivering a stellar performance with 21 points and hitting 3-of-6 free throws. She was supported by Ella Phillips, who added 14 points, and Akiah Harwig, who contributed 4 points.

On Friday, the Lady Trojans dominated the Trinity Lady Tigers 54-21 as Trinity had no answer for the Coldspring press defense.

Head Coach Monique Whitaker said the top players were Ella Phillips, A’Layla Goffney and Akiah Harwig

What started as a promising game for the Trojans quickly shifted in favor of the New Waverly Bulldogs after halftime as the Coldspring Trojans lost to the Bulldogs 55-62 in a district matchup on Jan. 14.

The game opened with both teams demonstrating solid defense and strong offensive plays. By the end of the first quarter, the score was tied at 11. As the second quarter progressed, the Trojans managed to pull ahead, leading 23-22. In the final moments before halftime, Bryan Douglas sank a buzzer-beating three-pointer, giving Coldspring a 26-22 advantage heading into the break.

During halftime, the Bulldogs regrouped and returned to the court with a revamped strategy. Their adjustments paid off as they dominated the third quarter, scoring 20 points while holding the Trojans to just 6. This dramatic shift in momentum left the Trojans trailing and scrambling to regain control of the game. In an attempt to turn things around, Head Coach Cordell Carter called a full timeout before the fourth quarter to implement a new game plan.

The Trojans fought valiantly in the final quarter, outscoring the Bulldogs 23-20. However, the deficit from the third quarter proved too much to overcome.

Josh Brimsley and Jayden Kelley led the Trojans in scoring with 12 points each. Dacoryin Barnes contributed 10 points; and Bryan Douglas, T.J. Johnson and Noah Bradford each added five points.

On Friday, the Trojans stormed back for a win, downing the Trinity Tigers 54-47.

Coldspring controlled the paint on both sides of the court while Trinity had trouble getting shots to sink.

Bryan Douglass had 17 points and 6 assists on the night, while Noah Bradford had 13 points and 4 assists and Jayden Kelly had 10 points and 12 rebounds.
