The phrase "if only" perfectly sums up the Lady Trojans’ game against the Lady Rattlers of Navasota — a game that came down to the wire but ultimately ended in heartbreak for Coldspring.
The Lady Trojans fought valiantly, staying neck-and-neck with Navasota until the final minutes, but fell just short with a 31-35 loss on Friday.
“If only there had been a few more minutes, the outcome could have been different,” echoed the sentiment of many fans and players alike.
The first half was a battle, with Coldspring trailing by just one point at halftime, 23-22, and well within striking distance. Navasota scored 12 points in the first quarter and 11 in the second, while the Lady Trojans matched them with 11 points in each quarter.
The second half saw Navasota outscore Coldspring 12-9, edging out the win.
Ella Phillips led the team with 9 points and went 3-for-6 at the free-throw line. A’Layla Goffney contributed two 3-point field goals and went 1-for-2 at the line.
Though the game ended with the score in the Lady Rattlers’ favor, Coldspring showed resilience and determination, proving they have what it takes to compete as district play looms.
The New Waverly Lady Bulldogs secured a 50-35 victory over the Lady Pirates on Dec. 10.
Jaz Richardson led the way for the Lady Pirates with 10 points, going 4-for-8 from the free-throw line. Despite her efforts, the Lady Pirates struggled offensively, unable to find their rhythm throughout the game.
Scoring for the Lady Pirates came in at 8, 6, 11, and 10 across the quarters, while the Lady Bulldogs consistently put up 13 points in three of the four quarters, finishing with 13, 11, 13, and 13. The Lady Bulldogs capitalized on their ability to hit key 3-pointers, pulling the game out of reach for the Lady Pirates.
The Lady Bulldogs ultimately took the victory back to New Waverly with a commanding 50-35 win. The Lady Pirates, unable to overcome their shooting woes, will look to regroup as they prepare for district play.
