COLDSPRING — Despite the steady rainfall, the spirit of remembrance remained undampened as residents of San Jacinto County gathered to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

The Memorial Day ceremony was moved indoors to Harold G. Davis American Legion Post 629, where a heartfelt and respectful tribute took place.

A strong crowd filled the hall, reflecting the community’s deep commitment to honoring its heroes. One of the most moving moments of the event came during the playing of Taps. As the solemn notes echoed through the room, the names of every San Jacinto County soldier who died in service — from World War I to the present — were read aloud. The tribute was a powerful reminder of the personal cost of freedom and the enduring legacy of those who served.

Dale Everitt, San Jacinto County’s Veterans Service Officer, opened the ceremony with words of gratitude and reflection, welcoming all in attendance. County Judge Fritz Faulkner followed with a welcome to the

Travis Kitchens, 258th District Court Judge, spoke about the brave men and women lost in air combat, sharing stories that highlighted the courage and sacrifice of America’s aviators throughout the years.

San Jacinto County Commissioner Luke Sweeney offered a particularly personal perspective. A former helicopter pilot in Vietnam, Sweeney recounted poignant stories from his time in service — memories that added both solemnity and heartfelt emotion to the ceremony.

Together, the speeches, stories, and musical tributes created a meaningful Memorial Day observance—one that honored the fallen with dignity and reminded the community of the profound debt owed to those who served.
