SHEPHERD — Preston Stephens has cemented his legacy at Shepherd High School, breaking both the career rushing yards and rushing touchdown records during his illustrious four-year tenure.
From 2021 to 2024, Preston posted a remarkable 5,020 rushing yards and 54 touchdowns and has set a new benchmark for future athletes at Shepherd.
Preston Stephens’ passion for football is undeniable.
“The thing about Preston is he truly believes that every time we take the field, we can win,” said Shepherd Head Coach and Athletic Director Miles Robison.
Beyond the numbers, Stephens has been a role model for his teammates and an ambassador for the Shepherd football program.
“We are extremely proud of this young man and how well he has represented our program over the years,” Robison added.
This season, despite playing in only nine games due to injuries, Stephens managed to rack up 1,622 yards and 15 touchdowns, facing some of the toughest competition in 4A football. His resilience and determination were evident every time he stepped on the field. True to form, though, he often credits his offensive line for his success.
In his junior year, Preston shattered the single season rushing record at Shepherd with an astonishing 2,161 yards and 23 touchdowns, solidifying his reputation as one of the best running backs in the state.
In 2022, Stephens teamed up with quarterback H.D. Green to form a dynamic rushing duo. The pair became the first in Shepherd history to each surpass 1,000 rushing yards in the same season. Stephens finished the year with 1,087 yards and 14 touchdowns, showcasing his consistency and versatility.
Even as a freshman, Stephens gave fans a glimpse of his potential, rushing for 150 yards and 2 touchdowns in limited action.
As Stephens looks ahead to the next chapter, he is currently exploring his options for collegiate football. Wherever he lands, one thing is certain: the legacy he leaves behind at Shepherd will not soon be forgotten.
