Robert “Sambo” Cowart of Woodville, Texas, was called home by his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, December 11, 2024.

He is survived by his brother, Leon Cowart and wife, Geneva, of Willis, Texas; nephew, Ronnie Cowart and wife Anne of Willis, Texas; and niece, Rhonda Pagan of Woodville, Texas, who has been his caregiver for the last 12 years.  He is also survived by his sister, Alice “Mearn” Votaw and husband, Horace Votaw of Houston, Texas; niece, Rita Blanks of Houston and niece, Renita Keziah, also of Houston.   He is also survived by his very close friend, Earl “Squirrely” Higgins of The Woodlands, Texas.  They have been friends since attending Mary Brantley Smiley High School together and then on into the army.

Sam was stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War and was in charge of supplies for the U.S. Army. After the army, he worked with heavy equipment as a dispatcher and held various other positions in the field.

In the last few years of his life, his health had declined, but he survived, by the grace of God, Lymphoma cancer, and then, in the last 2 years, he succumbed to Lewy Body Dementia.

He appreciated all his relationships with family and friends, and one of his notorious statements when saying he loved someone was, “I love you a wad and a gob and a whole bunch.”  He is now a special gift to Heaven.

Sam’s graveside service will be held at Mount Pisgah Cemetery in Woodville on Saturday, December 21, 2024, at 2 p.m.  His brother, Leon Cowart, will conduct the service.  In lieu of flowers, Sam requested that guests and family donate to Shriners Children’s Texas Hospital in Galveston or Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston.

Services are under the direction of Riley Funeral Home in Woodville.   299
